TOUR Transalp 2019 - stage #5

Livigno -> Aprica

There are already over 500 km driven and over 11,000 meters of altitude climbed, nevertheless, it remains a long way to Riva del Garda. Day 5 began as the 4th day ended, and also that before: pure sun and midsummer warm. Even if the altitude - Livigno is at just over 1,800 m - made for somewhat cooler temperatures at the start. But the focus of today was the Mortirolo Pass (1,852 m), notorious and almost feared for its average gradient of over 10% over 12 km!
Our boys Richard Palma and Christian Resch from Team Kaltern am See were able to master the first two passes - the Passo d'Eira (2,208 m) and the Passo del Foscagno (2,291 m) - almost without any problems, and in the subsequent descent they gathered their strength for the third ascent: the very ramp for climbing specialists, on which one struggles past the monument of the late Marco Pantani.
Once at the top, it was still a matter of getting to the finish safely after the brutal effort of the 30 kilometers. Our two racers managed this, but annoyingly lost some time to some competitors from the same category due to a flat tire (Richard) a few kilometers before the finish line. Shortly after 13 o'clock the two dynamic bikers crossed the finish line in Aprica, and were happy about the 5th fastest time of the Grand Masters. Thus the current 4th place in the overall standings could be further secured. In addition, the team is currently the fastest purely South Tyrolean team.

Stage number 6 leads us tomorrow, Friday, in the Italian mountain bike Mecca of Val di Sole: the destination is the small village of Ossana there. The stage itself is not so hard compared to the previous days. Although the Mortirolo ( and subsequently also the Passo del Tonale ) is to be ridden again, but no longer so long and steep, and with a somewhat wavy profile (1,000 meters of altitude distributed over just under 28 km). Also the Tonalepass has coming from Ponte di Legno, no extremely steep climbs. Interesting is then in Osanna the final climb, with a gravel road on the last 1.5 kilometers.
