Italian Youth MTB Cup in Pergine (TN)

2.6.2022

Another podium finish for Julia Kostner in the heat of Pergine

The 16th Bruno Alverà XCO Memorial took place on Saturday 2 June in Pergine: in the well-known Parco Tre Castagni, Polisportiva Oltrefersina organised a cross-country mountain bike race for young people aged 13 to 16, which also counted towards the Italian Youth Club Championship.

The course was very selective: long and full of technical obstacles, but still very interesting and enjoyable. With the summer temperatures on top of that, the young people suffered a lot.

The 13-year-old Esordienti riders set off at 10 a.m.: unfortunately, this time only Paul Marschall was there, as Leon Ambach is still suffering from the injury he sustained in the previous race (on 20 May 2022 at the Sudtirol Cup race in Panchià). Paul managed to master his task well and, with two consistent laps, managed to finish in 52nd place. Shortly afterwards, at around 11 a.m., the 14-year-olds set off: Hannes Volgger and Johannes Bendetta were two dynamic bikers. While Hannes also completed his two laps consistently, Johannes suffered a collapse in the second lap and lost many positions: he finished behind Hannes (41st place) and took 67th place.

Then it was the girls' turn: the midday sun was beating down mercilessly, and it was important to manage their energy well and drink plenty of fluids. Julia led from the start and kept the leading group under control. She had a great duel with Sophie Messmer, rider for KSV - For Fun Cycling Team and her teammate at Landeskader Südtirol. She had to let her go at the start of the first lap, but managed to overtake her in the second lap. And with a lively attack towards the end of the race, she broke away from Sophie and even almost caught up with the two girls (in 3rd and 2nd place) ahead of her - Julia ultimately finished in a pleasing fourth place; Sophie finished just behind her in fifth place.

The last race of the day saw Philipp Lintner at the start, who had to complete four laps in the scorching heat. Philipp is still suffering a little from the consequences of a fall; in addition, he suffered greatly from the heat: already in the second lap, he had to give up and reduce his speed considerably, which ultimately led him to a disappointing 44th place.

But all in all, it was a successful day of competition - congratulations to the organisers of the ‘Scuola nazionale MTB Oltrefersina’ (Oltrefersina National MTB School) who, as in previous editions, once again managed to put on a great sporting event!
