6th Ortler Bike MTB Marathon

4.6.2022

The Upper Vinschgau Valley in mountain bike fever!

After two years, it's that time again: the 6th edition of the Ortler Bike Marathon is scheduled to take place.

The organising team led by Gerald Burger and Jürgen Geiser completely revamped the event for this occasion: the start was no longer in Glorenza, but directly in front of the bell tower of the church on Lake Resia, in Curon. They also changed the routes, resulting in a completely new, very varied and exciting circuit. And because they try to offer something for all cyclists, there are now a total of four routes to choose from... and some of them are quite challenging!
For beginners, we recommend the new short route of 29 kilometres, which, with an elevation gain of 850 metres, is also feasible for less experienced cyclists. The Classic distance of 46 kilometres already has an elevation gain of 1,650 metres and seems ideal for hobby cyclists. The long route, covering 69 kilometres and 2,400 metres of elevation gain, is intended for trained cyclists; it takes several hours to complete. The highlight of the event is undoubtedly the new marathon distance: 111 kilometres and 3,905 metres of elevation gain (exactly the height of the Ortler massif) demand everything from the participants.

The Dynamic Bike Team arrived with five competitors, spread across the long distance (Moritz Giuliani, Max Seppi and Sebastian Bertoli) and the newly created and somewhat daunting marathon distance (Cristina Nardin and Gregor Pinggera).

After overnight rain, the weather was at its best: cool, clear skies and bright sunshine – ideal conditions for a race.
The race started promptly at 8 a.m. with the first participants in the longest distance: Gregor – by far the youngest participant in the 111 kilometres – and Cristina threw themselves into the fray after the starting signal; At 8:40 a.m., they were followed by the other three dynamic bikers, Moritz, Max and Sebastian.
In San Valentino alla Muta, the crossing point for all routes, Andy Pichler was on hand with water bottles and gels to support the dynamic riders with supplies. The first to pass was Sebastian (thanks in part to the shorter route), followed closely by Moritz and Max. Then came the marathon participants, including Gregor, who was doing well in the race up to that point. Cristina was a little further back at that point, wanting to take a slower and more steady approach to the race.

At around midday, the moment arrived: after just over three hours, Sebastian was the first of the Dynamic Bikers to reach the finish line – his time of 3:10 hours not only meant victory in his age group, but also the third fastest time over the long distance.

Just under an hour later, youth coach Moritz also crossed the finish line, coming in 13th in his category. Max didn't have to wait long either, finishing his first race in 4 hours and 17 minutes... the fifth fastest time in the ‘Just For Fun’ category on his new bike, which he had received just two days earlier.

In the meantime, it had started to rain, but fortunately only for a short time – two of our bikers were still on the marathon route. After 6 hours and 16 minutes, an exhausted but very satisfied Gregor finally crossed the finish line: as by far the youngest participant in the 111 km race, he achieved an excellent 36th place in the Elite category with this time. And after just over 7½ hours, it was Cristina's turn: for her, as for Gregor, it was the longest MTB marathon she had ever competed in.

Overall, it was a great result for our marathon runners and a successful event where we will most likely meet again next year.
