2022 Italian Youth MTB Championships in Bielmonte (BI)

The first national championship for our young riders!

As every year in July, the Italian youth cross-country mountain bike championships took place last weekend.

This year's venue was the Bielmonte ski resort (Piedmont), located at an altitude of just under 1,500 metres above sea level.
Due to new regulations introduced for the first time this year, the team did not know until the last minute whether and who would be competing alongside Julia Kostner (who had already qualified). In the end, Paul Marschall was nominated alongside Leon Ambach, meaning that our youth team was able to travel almost in full force.

The course was not very long (3.5 km), but there were some very steep climbs, the first one immediately after the start.
Julia was the first of the three young people to compete on Sunday morning, starting her race at 9 a.m. Starting from the third row in a field of 36, the young Eppan native was still in 21st place after the first corner, but she made her way up the long climb and was already in 10th place after the first of two laps. Julia managed to make up ground in the second lap and ultimately finished in a very competitive 6th place.

In the boys' race, the starting field was much larger: 90 participants set off on the three laps, where Leon got off to a fairly good start, while Paul - as in the Elba race - had another early crash in front of him and saw the field from behind on the long climb. The track was dry and dusty, and the heat, which was now making itself felt, made things even more difficult for the boys. But they held on until the end and finished 58th (Leon) and 77th (Paul).

Now it's time for a short break (from competition): the next events will take place starting in August.
We will continue with the second part of the Raiffeisen South Tyrol MTB Cup, with three races still to be held:

20/8 Collepietra
4/9 Colle/Val Casies (finale)
