An intensive race weekend in Leukerbad (Switzerland)

Last weekend’s mountain bike race was certainly no walk in the park!

As announced, the Dynamic Bike Junior Team travelled to Switzerland: our riders Daniel Cavosi, Gregor Pinggera and Michael Volgger took part in the first round of the Swiss Bike Cup in Leukerbad (Canton of Valais), a town situated at an altitude of 1,400 metres. The course awaiting them was approximately 3.5 km long, with a 140-metre elevation gain, featuring various sections through the forest and a long, steep climb.

Upon arrival on Friday evening, the welcome at the destination was rather cold and damp. Saturday’s training session then took place in continuous rain: the course inspection had to be carried out with caution, so as not to jeopardise Sunday’s start.

The race started punctually at 9.30 am on Sunday; as usual, the junior starting group was huge, with 122 athletes from all over Europe. To make matters worse, it started snowing just before the start and a freezing wind picked up; the thermometer read 2 degrees. Due to the weather conditions, the jury decided to shorten the race distance from 6 to 5 laps.

Our lads had to start – as has often been the case this season – from the back of the field once again. Dani got off to a flying start and was able to make up a lot of places in the opening lap. A little way behind him were Michi and Gregor, who had to change his front wheel just before the start of the race due to a puncture.

After the first lap, Dani was already in 41st position, with Michi and Gregor following but some way behind. On the second lap, Gregor then had a setback: after a push, he jumped back on his bike and knocked the saddle out of place. Unable to adjust it by hand, he had to push his bike all the way to the technical area, where the damage was repaired immediately, but he had lost a great deal of ground. Meanwhile, Dani had dropped a few places: he wasn’t feeling well and had to slow down from time to time. To make matters worse for the team, Michi had also had a day where things didn’t go as planned.

After three laps, Michi and Gregor had to stop due to the 80% rule (the slowest riders are withdrawn from the race in progress); one lap later, it was their teammate Dani’s turn too. Thus, the Swiss winter adventure ended with finishes of 57th (Dani), 88th (Michi) and 94th (Gregor).

The next race for our juniors will take place on Saturday 15 May, alongside all the young riders from the Dynamic Bike Team: the Provincial Cross Country Championship races will be held in Laces on a new course.
