Granfondo Marcialonga Cycling 2013

Now in its 7th edition, the Marcialonga took place on Sunday, July 7, under bright sunshine. Nearly 2,200 participants had registered and split themselves between the two available routes.

On both courses (116 km and 68 km), the winner was decided in a sprint finish, and a South Tyrolean—more specifically, a rider from the Eppaner Dynamic Bike Team—was in the mix for both sprints!

On the short course (68 km with 1,150 meters of elevation gain), our club champion Michael Zemmer finished in 7th place. But the much bigger surprise came from Mathias Schweiggl on the long course (116 km and 2,350 meters of elevation gain): the Kurtatscher rider was narrowly beaten only by three former pros—Dainius Kairelis (former Lithuanian road champion and Olympian), Enrico Zen (winner of, among other races, last weekend’s Granfondo Giordana 2013), and Alessandro Bertuola (winner of, among other races, the 2013 Granfondo Valli Bresciane); All four crossed the finish line within one and a half seconds of each other!! Mathias left cycling greats such as Jarno Varesco (5th place), Carlo Muraro (6th place), and Roberto Cunico (8th place) behind him.

Mathias Schweiggl had to start the race from the second starting block with bib number 323 and work his way up to the front. Still in 6th place on the final climb (from Welschnofen toward the Karer Pass), he first shook off Varesco and Cunico, and by the time he reached Lake Karer, he had made up over 2 minutes of lost time and caught up to the top three. He even crossed the Karer Pass first, winning the race’s mountain prize. The quartet stayed together all the way down to Predazzo; on the home stretch (a total of 800 meters long), as mentioned earlier, there was a sprint where Mathias Schweiggl didn’t stand a chance—his opponents were simply too strong. But a 4th-place finish in the overall standings of the Granfondo Marcialonga Cycling is a remarkable achievement!

This coming Sunday, July 14, the Italian Mountain Time Trial Cycling Championship will take place in Berzo Inferiore (BS). We’re keeping our fingers crossed for our two racers, Michi and Mathias!
